![]() ![]() In her spare time she volunteers as Layout Manager for the GNSI's Journal of Natural Science Illustration, and Graphic Designer for GNSI's annual Visual SciComm Conference. For 14+ years she served as Senior Illustration Editor at the nonprofit Annual Reviews, and edited approximately 9,000 figures and captions across 26 scientific journals, e.g., Public Health (Annual Reviews' first open access journal), Marine Science, Ecology, Immunology, Cancer Biology, Cell and Developmental Biology, Nutrition, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Materials Research, and more. Stephanie Mohr, which was selected as one of Smithsonian's Ten Best Science Books of 2018. Her illustrations and layouts have been featured in numerous scientific publications including News and Features on and First in Fly by Dr. ![]() Currently she's exploring a new role as Graphic Artist at The Seattle Times, creating visuals and charts that help explain abstract concepts to the public.įiona has 17 years of experience illustrating and designing for a wide range of clients, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Park Service (NPS), Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), Princeton University Press, and Whole Foods Market. Upon graduation she completed dual internships with the Channel Islands National Park in California and Electronic Publishing Company in New York City. in Marine Biology (summa cum laude) from the University of California in Santa Cruz, and then pursued a Graduate Certificate in Science Illustration. Defying expectations, Fiona graduated as valedictorian of her high school class, obtained a B.S. In public schools and in the workplace, she learned to adapt using a combination of speech reading and technology. Traditional renderings are offered in pencil, pen-and-ink, watercolor, and acrylic.įiona was born with a rare genetic hearing loss in both ears, but she hasn't let her deafness hold her back. Fiona works primarily in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, as well as Photoshop, Procreate, and ArcGIS. Specialties include digitally rendered infographics, conceptual illustrations, data visualization, and layout design.
